Sold Out – Exploring the Everglades: A Walk Through the River of Grass

Join HistoryMiami Museum and Everglades National Park in celebration of the park’s 75th anniversary! Experience this unique landscape on an off-trail hike as you reflect upon the natural environment. Explore how the Everglades inspired a movement to preserve our wetlands and how it has continued to influence art and culture in Miami and beyond.

Tour will include a slough slog (wet hike), which will provide a hands-on view of the River of Grass and reveal the hidden world of a cypress dome.

All participants must bring the following:
  • Water
  • Sturdy close toed, lace-up shoes
  • Long Pants
The following items are suggested:
  • Sunscreen
  • Long sleeve shirt
  • Insect repellent
  • Binoculars
  • Snacks
  • Garbage bag, towel, and change of clothes (for the drive home!)

Featured Speakers:

T. Wheeler Castillo

Thom Wheeler Castillo lives and works in Miami, FL; Graduated from PNCA, Intermedia. Wheeler Castillo is interested in the landscape and ecosystems, past (art history) and present (Environmental Studies); he works from an interdisciplinary approach in his relentless pursuit of poetry, art history, earth science and anthropology.

Please note the tour does not include the entrance fee to Everglades National Park. Tour participants will meet at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center to be followed by a 15-minute drive to the location of our hike.
