Role Summary:

The Board of Trustees of HistoryMiami Museum seek a visionary and entrepreneurial leader to serve as the next Executive Director succeeding Jorge Zamanillo who is leaving to be the Founding Director of the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of the American Latino, in Washington, D.C. We seek a seasoned professional with a deep passion for the Museum’s mission to obtain, preserve, safeguard, and share Miami stories to foster learning and inspire a sense of place, and cultivate an engaged community. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director will provide the strategic direction, tactical leadership, and administrative skills to guide the Museum in the fulfillment of its mission.

The Executive Director will be responsible for, and oversight of, the staff, functions, and operations of the Museum and for conducting successful fundraising, marketing, and communications, and for strengthening and fortifying HistoryMiami’ s financial health. They will also be responsible for all accounting and financial matters, investments, legal matters, external and governmental affairs, human resources, construction, facilities management, information systems, and all other administrative functions. The Executive Director is the public face of the institution, and as such serves as the primary champion, advocate, and spokesperson.

The Executive Director will provide the inspiring leadership and institutional cohesion, and communicates the work and aspirations of the Museum, mobilizes the Board, community, and political support in pursuit of its mission and goals.

Candidate Profile

  • Executive leadership experience: A track record of effective executive leadership and management, including strategic planning and implementation, program creation and assessment, financial oversight, board relations, and volunteer management
  • Substantial fundraising experience: Familiarity with annual and capital giving, membership cultivation and giving, and corporate, foundation, government, and individual giving
  • Managerial strength: An orientation to collaborative teamwork, superb organizational skills, outstanding oral and written communication skills. An understanding of data-driven decision making and the ability to develop systems and policies that promote transparency, fairness, equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Personal qualities: Integrity, imagination, creativity, passion for the mission, collegiality, persistence, and resilience. An open and approachable style, humility, and a sense of humor
