DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Coconut Grove’s 150th anniversary with HistoryMiami Museum and Coconut Grove Business Improvement District! Explore the history of the Grove\, the land across from the light\, with the museum’s Coordinator of Education Programs and Community Engagement\, Ingrid E. Argueta and Resident Historian\, Dr. Paul S. George. Hear accounts of some of the Grove’s early settlers\, including E. W. F. Stirrup and Mariah Brown\, the Beasley\, Frow\, and Pent families\, and of Dr. Horace Porter\, whose opening of a post office gave the area its name. Visit The Barnacle\, Commodore Ralph Munroe’s home built during the Era of the Bay; and learn how Bahamian settlers influenced the development of the Grove with their knowledge of tropical plants and native building materials. \n\n\n\nSponsored by Coconut Grove Business Improvement District. Argueta was born in Guatemala and immigrated to Miami when she was 7 years old. Although not a native Miamian\, she is a 305-er at heart. Ingrid has remained true to her indigenous roots and is passionate about Native American history and culture. Ingrid currently serves as HistoryMiami Museum’s Coordinator of Education Programs and Community Engagement and has been with the museum for 10 years. \n\n\n\nDr. Paul S. George\, Resident Historian at HistoryMiami Museum\n\n\n\nFor over three decades\, HistoryMiami Museum’s Resident Historian Dr. Paul S. George has toured his way to local\, national\, and international acclaim with his continuing series of historic tours. Through walking\, coach\, and boat tour experiences\, Dr. George has welcomed tour participants on a memorable journey of South Florida through its historic neighborhoods\, landmarks\, and sites.
