DESCRIPTION:Journey through time with Dr. George during our In Class with Dr. George series! In Class with Dr. George delves into the layered histories of Miami and greater South Florida. Hosted by HistoryMiami Museum’s Resident Historian\, Dr. Paul S. George\, and presented in conversation with a community stakeholder\, this lecture series will include a thematic exploration of topics ranging from South Florida’s unique environment\, transportation\, aviation\, and architecture. \n\n\n\nA History of Transportation with Guest Speaker Javier Betancourt\, Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust (CITT)\n\n\n\nLearn about the history of transportation in Miami – from dugout canoes to cruise ships; and the arrival of the train to the introduction of trolleys and cars. Dr. George will be joined by Javier Betancourt\, Executive Director of the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust (CITT)\, an independent agency of Miami-Dade County charged with oversight of the “half penny” transportation surtax and implementation of the associated People’s Transportation Plan. \n\n\n\nCapacity is limited. Betancourt serves as Executive Director of the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust (CITT)\, a quasi-independent agency of Miami-Dade County charged with oversight of the “half penny” transportation surtax and implementation of the associated People’s Transportation Plan. \n\n\n\nA critical and ongoing priority of the CITT is advancement of the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) plan which seeks to expand the current rapid transit system along six major corridors: the South Dade Transit Way (along US 1)\, East-West Corridor\, Kendall Corridor\, North Corridor (along 27th Avenue)\, Northeast Corridor and Beach Corridor. \n\n\n\nPrior to the CITT\, Javier most recently served as Economic Development Director for the City of Coral Gables\, and Deputy Director at the Miami Downtown Development Authority\, and has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to serving his community through active participation on a variety of professional and community organizations\, including the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce\, Goodwill South Florida\, Leadership Florida and Urban Health Partnerships. \n\n\n\nJavier received a Bachelor’s degree in International Politics from Georgetown University\, a Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning from Florida Atlantic University\, and prior AICP certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners. \n\n\n\n\n\nPaul S. George\, Ph.D.Resident Historian\n\n\n\nFor over three decades\, HistoryMiami Museum’s Resident Historian Dr. Paul S. George has toured his way to local\, national\, and international acclaim with his continuing series of historic tours. Through walking\, coach\, and boat tour experiences\, Dr. George has welcomed tour participants on a memorable journey of South Florida through its historic neighborhoods\, landmarks\, and sites.
