Miami Mythical Mornings: Guided Tour with Islandia Journal’s Fola Akinde

08/19/2023 @ 11:00 am 1:00 pm

Journey to the world of mythic creatures as you explore the stories behind some of Miami’s most fantastical beings during this special program series.

Reflect upon the lore and legends surrounding mythical creatures on a tour of the exhibition with Coordinator of Education Programs and Community Engagement, Ingrid E. Argueta in conversation with Fola Akinde, a Miami-based interdisciplinary artist focused on ideas of Black hauntology as it relates to memory, history, and conceptions of liberation and the first artist-in-residence of Islandia Journal: a (sub)tropical periodical of myth, folklore, history, ecology, cryptozoology, and the paranormal.

Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids traces the natural and cultural roots of some of the world’s most enduring mythological creatures from Asia, Europe, the Americas, and beyond. This amazing exhibition includes imaginative models, paintings, and textiles, along with other cultural objects from around the world ranging from Chinese shadow puppets to Greek coins that bring to light surprising similarities in the ways people around the world have been inspired by nature to envision and depict these strange and wonderful creatures.

Program includes general admission to the museum.

Fola Akinde
2023 Islandia AIR

Fola Akinde is a Miami-based interdisciplinary artist focused on ideas of Black hauntology as it relates to memory, history, and conceptions of liberation. Their Nigerian cultural background has inspired an interest in archives and research related to the Black diaspora, including history and folklore related to Nigeria, the US, Caribbean, and Latin America.

Fola’s work was featured in the Spring Undergraduate Exhibition at SAIC Galleries, and they were awarded an Ellie from Oolite Arts in 2022. Much of their work is focused on the importance of expanding the idea of what an archive is, its accessibility, and how that documentation can play a role in (re)assemblage of imagery and memory. Incorporating archival items like found imagery, objects, writings, and ephemera, Fola has reconfigured their own conceptions of narratives, mythology, and illuminate connections to sites and spiritual practices.
