SUMMARY:Sold Out - Opening Party: It's a Miami Thing
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the City of Miami’s 125th birthday\, HistoryMiami invites the community to the exhibition opening of It’s a Miami Thing and the unveiling of a “Julia Tuttle\, The Mural.”\n\nIt’s a Miami Thing features highlights from the museum’s vast collection of artifacts and archival materials. Over the decades\, the museum has collaborated with the community to collect\, preserve\, and share local history\, in particular objects that document the uniqueness of our city. It’s a Miami Thing will display hundreds of items including unearthed Tequesta artifacts from 800 A.D.\, Seminole patchwork clothing\, prints from naturalist John James Audubon’s Birds of America\, treasure salvaged from a shipwreck\, and a cape from famed astrologer Walter Mercado.\n\n“Julia Tuttle\, The Mural” will also be unveiled in the Folklife gallery in commemoration of the 125th birthday of Miami. The mural is an initiative of the PLY-Miami Fiber Art Collective. Conceived as a “visual love letter” to the woman who founded the City of Miami in 1896\, the mural was designed from a black and white image published in the Miami Herald.  For over a year\, group members were knitting\, stitching\, crocheting\, painting\, and quilting the leaves and flowers that complete Julia’s dress and background.\n\nDuring the celebration you will enjoy complimentary beverages\, light bites\, and music\, as you explore some of the most unique objects in the museum’s collection. The event is FREE with pre-registration: https://bit.ly/opening-210729\n\nThe exhibition is presented with the generous support of Miami Dade County\, State of Florida\, Department of State\, Division of Arts and Culture and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture\, Bermont Gold Wealth Advisory of Raymond James\, Daly Family Foundation\, and Mark Migdal & Hayden.
