SUMMARY:Opening Reception for South Beach\,1974-1990: Photographs of a Jewish Community
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Opening Event on October 26 of our newest exhibition! See South Beach\, 1074-1990: Photographs of a Jewish Community before it opens to the public. Drinks and appetizers will be served. Register here.\nSouth Beach\, 1974-1990: Photographs of a Jewish Community explores South Beach the way it was. During the 1970s and 1980s\, highlighted photographers Gay Block\, Gary Monroe\, Richard Nagler\, David Scheinbaum\, and Andy Sweet each undertook long-term documentation projects of South Beach\, before the neighborhood transformed into today’s world famous tourist and nightlife destination. HistoryMiami Museum will display selections from each of their projects\, offering personal portraits of the neighborhood in an era when South Beach was predominantly an elderly Jewish community. In addition to photography\, the exhibition will also feature Gay Block’s documentary A Bie Gesunt (As Long As You’re Well)\, cameras\, and archival material related to the highlighted photography projects.  \nThis is a project of the museum’s Center for Photography. Sponsors include the Knight Foundation and Susannah and John Shubin.

SUMMARY:A Message to the Community
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends of HistoryMiami Museum\,\n\nI want to provide an update on the Museum as we navigate through these challenging times. The upcoming exhibition Embracing the Lens: The BlackFlorida Project will not be on display at the museum. Photographer\, Johanne Rahaman\, and curator\, Dr. Jeffreen Hayes\, requested to withdraw the exhibition\, originally set to open in March before we were forced to close our doors due to Covid-19. We are saddened by their decision as we believe in their work and looked forward to sharing it. We wish them continued success in their endeavors.\n\nDuring this time\, the world has dealt with Covid-19 and shifted how we go through our daily lives. We are also in the midst of facing the continued murders of Black lives\, anti- Black racism\, immigration issues negatively affecting communities of color\, and de-humanizing effects of institutionalized racism. From the beginning when museums came to be\, we know that museums have caused harm and continue to do so\, intentionally\, and implicitly. Museums have excluded people from decision-making and left important voices out of exhibitions and publications.\n\nWe commit to being better at HistoryMiami Museum. In my time as the director of the museum\, we have made progress in issues of diversity\, equity\, access\, and inclusion. But as I told our staff\, and our board\, we aren’t done yet. This work will be ever evolving\, because we will continually find areas of growth\, and the needs of the community will be varied.\n\nFollowing concerns and suggestions from photographer Johanne Rahaman and curator Dr. Jeffreen Hayes\, along with conversations and meetings with local stakeholders\, our Board of Trustees\, and staff\, we are committed to the following:\n\n1. Henry Flagler Award – We will retire the Henry Flagler award we give to a community leader during our annual Flamingo Ball. Flagler built his railroad empire using forced Black labor practices\, leasing African American incarcerated labor from the State\, and had anti-Semitic beliefs. We have decided to rename it to reflect its intent – the HistoryMiami Museum Community Service Award.\n\n2. Board Diversity – We do not have a diverse Board of Trustees. In Miami\, we are not unique to this issue and commit to seeking collective solutions to address this deficit. We are working with our Trustees to create a more diverse board that better reflects the community we serve. Our new Chairman has begun conversations with the Trustees regarding his intent to implement new diversity guidelines and efforts\, including: continuing to meet with Black community stakeholders and working on mechanisms to make board participation more accessible\, having Trustees take part in anti-racism professional development beginning in September 2020\, and implement board diversity guidelines by October 2020.\n\n3. Anti-racism professional development for all staff\, and contractual staff\, beginning in September 2020. All full-time and part-time staff continue to be employed at the museum and will participate in the training.\n\n4. Attracting and retaining Black staff members – We are committed to continuing to increase Black representation on our staff. While we have a diverse staff that includes Black\, Asian\, Latinx people with diverse lived experience\, we are committed to increasing Black representation\, particularly in positions of leadership.\n\n5. Working with a community liaison\, we will schedule a series of community listening circles to create space to hear directly from community stakeholders beginning in September 2020.\n\n6. Based on community input\, we will develop a Community Advisory Board by December 2020.\n\n7.  We will re-design our Tropical Dreams permanent exhibition to attend to the absences of Black individual stories and community contributions\, such as Mariah Brown\, a Black Bahamian settler who built one of the first homes in Coconut Grove. We will name what truths are missing and include the difficult and painful history with input and contributions from our community advisory board.\n\nIn all this named work\, we have internal and external work that needs to be done and will be ever evolving. It is essential for us to be mindful about how and what we communicate and intentionally attend to authentic relationship building with our stakeholders and partners.\n\nMuseums should be truly of the people\, by the people\, and for the people. We renew our commitment to serving as your museum.\n\nPlease feel free to share your comments and questions.\n\nIn good health\,\n\nJorge Zamanillo\, Executive Director\nHistoryMiami Museum\n\n \n\nThis document has been edited from a previous version to include that list of commitments was formed from concerns and suggestions from curator Dr. Jeffreen Hayes\, Johanne Rahaman\, and community stakeholders.

SUMMARY:Update: A Message to the Community
DESCRIPTION:Dear friends of HistoryMiami Museum\,\n\nOver the summer of 2020\, HistoryMiami Museum was challenged to do better.\n\nWe made a commitment to our community to examine our actions\, policies and practices as an institution to ensure that we do the work to be an anti-racist museum. We at HistoryMiami Museum are working every day to be a museum that is of\, by\, and for our community.\n\nIn August\, we sent out a list of commitments to you in a letter after receiving feedback from collaborators\, community stakeholders\, and staff. In the last 6 months we have started working towards delivering on these commitments. The museum secured a community consultant from the Black community in August to work in partnership with us and to ensure that we center this work in an authentic way.\n\nThis work is only beginning\, but our goal is to be as transparent as possible in our commitment to diversity\, equity\, access\, and inclusion (DEAI)\, so we’d like to share this update with you today.\n\n Commitment – Retire Henry Flagler Award \nUpdate:  As detailed in our last letter\, we retired our Henry Flagler Award that was awarded at our annual Flamingo Ball to a family or business who has made significant contributions to the community.\n Commitment – Board diversity\nUpdate: The board has been meeting with Black community stakeholders\, and we are electing additional board members this month. Our board voted to remove the potential barrier of financial commitment to join the board. Board members have also taken part in tours of the museum to review the strengths and weaknesses of our core exhibition in order to provide feedback to help inform our future work.  A board member has also donated a large gift that will go toward a new initiative to amplify stories from the Black community that we will be announcing soon.\n Commitment – Anti-racism professional development for staff\nUpdate: Through ongoing trainings and discussions\, we are continuing to focus on how we can be more diverse\, equitable\, and inclusive in all of our work at the museum. Staff has worked with the Yes Institute on anti-bias training and took part in the YWCA 21-Day Challenge to develop a deeper understanding of how inequity and racism affect our lives and our community. Staff also took part in an authentic community engagement seminar. The leadership team will begin DEAI coaching this month with an outside consultant.\n Commitment – Attracting and retaining Black staff\nUpdate: We are diligently working to be mindful of who the museum employs to ensure we are offering opportunities for our diverse community. We continue our effort to retain and hire diverse staff members. We have enhanced the way we advertise our open positions to include creating advertisements in The Miami Times\, and are working with universities\, professors\, BIPOC student groups\, and local non-profits to better recruit people of color. We modified our way of accepting applications and now take hard copy applications for those that do not have access to a computer. We have also created space for staff to express themselves and receive support.\n Commitment – Formulate listening circles\nUpdate: We know the only way to do better is by listening to and engaging with our community\, regularly and one on one. With the help of our consultant\, internal interviews of all staff members\, during which each member was provided the opportunity to share feedback on diversity\, equity\, accessibility\, and inclusion\, have been conducted. We also began meeting with external members of the community to hear their thoughts on how we can better move forward. More listening circles are being planned for this year so that we can hear from the community at large. We will also hold more intimate listening circles with various community stakeholders\, including members of the Black community\, LGBTQ+ community\, Latinx community\, and educators.\n Commitment  – Create an advisory board\nUpdate: Once we finalize these listening circles\, we will look to create an advisory board. We had initially hoped to have one established by December 2020\, but soon realized it was essential to complete all listening circle efforts before developing that board.\n Commitment  – Updating Tropical Dreams exhibition \nUpdate:  As an institution\, we are striving to present the full complexity of the community’s history within all our work\, and to offering platforms for Black artists\, curators\, and other collaborators to share their stories. We are working tirelessly to tell a more complete history of the people who shaped Miami\, and staff is actively making changes to our core exhibition\, Tropical Dreams: A People’s History of South Florida\, which tells the story of our community. This ongoing process has involved many tasks\, including addressing harmful language on labels\, expanding stories to be more representative\, and improving the overall appearance of the exhibition\, among other work. Many more changes are planned for the future.\n\n\n\nEvery day\, we are honored and humbled to be Miami’s museum. We know that we have work ahead of us to change our culture to one that is fully welcoming\, diverse\, and inclusive. In a nod to our equally important commitment to accessibility\, when we re-opened our doors in October we did so by announcing we are not charging an admission fee. We hope you will visit the museum soon.We will continue to update you on our commitments and look forward to sharing our progress.\n\nPlease feel free to share your comments and questions here.  Click here to read our original letter.\n\nSincerely\,\n\nJorge Zamanillo\, Executive Director\n\n\nJohn Shubin\, Chairman of the Board
