Designed by Zimmerman and McBride, with E. H. Ehman as associate architect, this impressive Streamline Moderne building opened in 1937 as a flagship Walgreen’s store, surpassing others in scale within the chain. Despite the Great Depression, Miami's tourism and aviation industry buoyed its economy. Featuring rounded contours and neon-lit signage, the store boasted a distinctive "streamline" aesthetic that attracted passersby. Inside, a rare basement housed a bustling pharmacy during the 1950s and 1960s, complemented by a well-stocked first floor offering sports merchandise and a popular lunch counter called the "rail," which integrated in 1960. A grand staircase led to a Deco-railing-lined atrium spanning the five-story building, with a restaurant atop. Walgreen’s thrived post-World War II but closed in the late 1980s amid downtown's decline, later hosting Sports Authority and La Epoca department store. Today, the building, designated locally and nationally historic, awaits renovation on E. Flagler Street amid downtown Miami's residential resurgence. Future plans include reopening as a vibrant venue with restaurants, bars, and office spaces.

Named after John Seybold, a prominent early resident of Miami known for his baking and real estate ventures after immigrating from Germany, the Seybold Building was originally designed by Kiehnel and Elliot in 1921. Initially a two-story structure spanning Northeast First Street to E. Flagler Street, it featured a grand arched entrance leading into a retail arcade. Seybold himself operated a bakery and confectionary on the ground floor.  During the real estate boom of 1925, Kiehnel and Elliot expanded the building to ten stories, solidifying its place as an iconic skyscraper in early Miami.Today, the Seybold Building holds significance as a historic landmark within the City of Miami and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Downtown Miami Historic District.  In 1939, architect Robert Law Weed added the Flagler Street arcade, enhancing the building's commercial appeal. Over the decades, it became a hub for various businesses and professional offices, particularly lawyers. The influx of Cuban jewelers in the 1960s transformed the Seybold Building into a vibrant center for jewelry making, a trend that continued to flourish into the 1970s and persists today. Currently, the building is renowned as the preeminent jewelry center south of New York City, with every available space occupied by jewelers and related businesses, creating a bustling trade environment that extends throughout the surrounding neighborhood.
