Position Overview:
The Folklife Associate for the South Florida Folklife Center at HistoryMiami Museum manages the Miami Stories oral history program which includes collecting oral histories, processing and archiving stories, leading trainings for staff, and coordinating Miami Stories Recording Booth events and other story collecting events. This position also assists the Folklife Curator in managing Folklife public programs, including artist-in-residence programs, CultureFest 305, and other outreach events. Conducts ethnographic research for the South Florida Folklife Collection, including oral history interviews and photo and video documentation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in development of public programs
- Assist in coordinating program logistics and managing programs
- Conduct field research and documentation of local cultural practices
- Conduct oral histories for the Miami Stories project
- Manage logistics for the Miami Stories Recording Booth
- Coordinate story collecting programs and outreach events
- Process audio, video, and written stories
- Maintain and update the Miami Stories finding aid
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- M.A. in folklore, ethnomusicology, anthropology or related discipline is preferred but not required with equivalent experience
- Experience with folklife initiatives or related projects and project management experience
- Experience in managing programs for public audiences, such as performances, panels, demonstrations, workshops, festivals, lectures, etc.
- Demonstrated experience with conducting field research, including recorded interviews
- Familiarity with audio equipment and camera
- Audio editing experience
Skills and Attributes:
- Strong project management and multitasking skills are essential
- Strong organization skills and attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team
- Strong listening and communication skills
- High level of interest in working with Miami’s diverse communities
- Knowledge of Spanish is preferable, but not mandatory
- Strong public speaking skills
- Ability to work inter-departmentally
