Explore the history of Pinewood Cemetery, the oldest cemetery south of the Miami River, with HistoryMiami Museum’s Coordinator of Education Programs and Community Engagement, Ingrid E. Argueta, and its Resident Historian, Dr. Paul S. George. Located in the City of Coral Gables, this rural graveyard dates back to the late 1800s and is the final resting place of more than 200 settlers. Learn how local residents are working to restore this once forgotten cemetery.

Ingrid E. Argueta
Coordinator of Education Programs and Community Engagement

Ingrid E. Argueta was born in Guatemala and immigrated to Miami when she was 7 years old. Although not a native Miamian, she is a 305-er at heart. Ingrid has remained true to her indigenous roots and is passionate about Native American history and culture. She is best known for her eco-history tours of Miami’s historic sites, neighborhoods, and waterways. Ingrid currently serves as HistoryMiami Museum’s Coordinator of Education Programs and Community Engagement and has been with the museum for 10 years.

Paul S. George, Ph.D.
Resident Historian

For over three decades, HistoryMiami Museum’s Resident Historian Dr. Paul S. George has toured his way to local, national, and international acclaim with his continuing series of historic tours. Through walking, coach, and boat tour experiences, Dr. George has welcomed tour participants on a memorable journey of South Florida through its historic neighborhoods, landmarks, and sites. As a Miami native, author, and former college professor, Dr. George has gained fame for his uncanny ability to recall the most impressive details about the people and places that make South Florida so unique.

We recommend bringing a water bottle, wearing light clothing, and comfortable shoes for walking. An umbrella is also recommended.
Please meet Museum staff for check-in between 9:15 am – 9:55 am. They will be waiting for you in front of the cemetery off of Erwin Road.
As Pinewood Cemetery is located in a residential neighborhood, there is limited to no parking at the cemetery. We encourage carpooling or taking a rideshare.
The tour will take place on unpaved and uneven terrain.
