September 21 @ 2:00 pm 3:30 pm

The Sacred Sound journey begins with an interactive presentation on sacred music by Ethnomusicologist Dr. Gerdès Fleurant followed by an avant-garde Vodou Alchemy sonic experience by somatic healer Dr. Nathalie Guillaume and Val Jeanty.

SANCTUARY: Our Sacred Place explores the spiritual roots of Miami by documenting moments of communion with the divine in temples, churches and mosques. This arresting photo series from Little Haiti artist WOOSLER DELISFORT highlights the experiences of Indigenous, African and Caribbean peoples and how they have maximized sacred spaces to serve as life sources for their communities – politically, psychologically, physically and spiritually.

Capacity is limited. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 1:30 pm.

Support for this program has been provided by The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation at The Miami Foundation.

Featured Speakers:

Dr. Nathalie Guillaume, DAOM, L.Ac
CEO and Medical Director Healing Happy Hour

Dr. Nathalie Guillaume was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in a musical family, where she was immersed in the arts very young. She is the grandniece of famous Haitian saxophonist-composer Raoul Guillaume as well as Guy Durosier, a versatile Haitian singer and organist whom Edith Piaf once called ”the living breath of Haiti’. Upon immigrating to the USA, she received scholarships to pursue her higher education in piano performance and the healing arts leading her to find a wholistic path in pursuing her passions in ancient civilizations through her Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. In addition to her clinical practice and teaching appointments, she regularly performs and produces with a variety of musicians and has recently been working on music scoring for films which led her to compose the theme song for a short Haitian film entitled “Brother Peace” featuring historian Bayina Bello. Her current performance instillation “Vodou Alchemy” is an avant-garde concept that weaves the Haitian traditional songbook with improvised sound and somatic therapy principles to immerse the audience in a profound ceremonial healing journey.

Dr. Gerdès Fleurant
Associate Professor Emeritus of Music

Dr. Gerdès Fleurant is an Ethnomusicologist focusing on the folk, ritual, and traditional music of Africa and the Americas, with specialization on the culture and rhythms of the Rada Rite of Haitian Vodou.

He teaches courses on the music of Africa, Afro-America, the Caribbean (Brazil, Cuba, and Haiti), world music, and fieldwork/research methods in Ethnomusicology. His research is grounded in his commitment to Applied Ethnomusicology, an approach that emphasizes tangible benefits for the people we study as well as the researcher. His research on the Rada Rite of Haitian Vodou, presented in his book Dancing Spirits: Rituals and Rhythms of Haitian Vodun, the Rada Rite, is considered a landmark, serving as a basis for the work of several emerging scholars and dancers to date. As a founding member of the Haitian Studies Association (HSA) and The Congress of Santa Barbara (KOSANBA), the Scholarly Association for the Study of Haitian Vodou, he participates actively in the socio-political life of Haiti. He served as a consultant to the Ministry of Culture, developing “Le Plan National de la Culture,” and was the first “Recteur” of the University of the Central Plateau (UPC) in a valiant effort to develop a public higher education network outside of Port-au-Prince, the capital city.

Together with his spouse, Florienne, the couple built and operate the Léocardie & Alexandre Kenscoff Cultural Center (C-CLAK) and the Gawou Ginou School (GGS) in Mirebalais, a pivotal town in Haiti’s Central Plateau. The Center welcomes exchange students and colleagues interested in the culture, traditional music and dance of Haiti. The center offers Wellesley students on site courses on Haitian Music, Dance, and Culture and produce performances from Wellesley’s “Yanvalou Drum and Dance Ensemble”, the performing ensemble co-founded in 1990 by Dr. Fleurant and his former student with Ms. Kera Washington.
